对的，我们系其实每届基本也都有quit的，但是绝大部分都是学生自己的原因，并且pandemic这届quit的最多。美国人很多都会quit，因为outside option实在太多了。

This is a good question and definitely a legitimate concern. The attrition rates for doctoral students are estimated at above 40 per cent across all disciplines in North America. The rate for those in business is presumably lower. Still, many of us on the forum who have gone through the 'crucible' of PhD life (and also who are currently in a PhD program) have personally seen people dropping out -- voluntarily or involuntarily. The reasons are legion, including academic failures and circumstances beyond control (e.g., the coronavirus mentioned here). A PhD is not for everyone, as they say. In the United States, only around one percent of the population have such a degree. For many, a PhD is for pride, if not for money -- it is an unrealistic expectation that both materialize for everyone.

dropout rate很高是一个red flag，要具体情况具体分析，可以找比较了解学校的人侧面调查一下，分形分析是否有问题还是只是个例，如果有问题这个问题是否已经解决/在预期内可以解决。

嗯嗯 我去LinkedIn看了下 发现quit的学生很多都是先有业界经验的，quit以后又回业界了，多半是因为业界诱惑太大了

大概能盲猜到A是美国东北某top30的知名技校。

我个人听到的rumor是：
A的研究水平的确很强。但A的研究方向和系里的氛围比较单一，系里被某大佬掌权，他下面的年轻教授也都是他的嫡系，研究的口味也很固定；之前A系有两位很强的AP，跳槽走人了（一位跳去了某校直接tenure了，另一位换到了OR系、毕业五年内citation已经上万了）。据说被排挤的原因是因为不按照这位大佬的口味做研究；传言是这位大佬的控制欲比较强，会说类似“不按我的口味做的话，你没法tenure的”这样的话，但这两位AP觉得他是在他自己压根不懂的领域上瞎指挥。

Disclaimer: 当然以上也只是我听到的rumor，楼主有机会可以跟这两位AP和A系以外的人员聊聊侧面了解一下。

所以，如果你跟A非常非常match的话，可能还不错；不然，虽然系里有好几位老师，但实际上没啥diversity，你在research方面没啥选择空间。
