个人浅见~
GMAT里面this这种属于指代不清，一般this+名词 才可以。并且根据逻辑意思，后面那半句话应该指的是”heated in a solution of calcium hydroxide (lime)" 这个动作，所以用同位语a process修饰非常清晰。
AB属于this的错误，排除
C谓语变成了removes，主语是chips，逻辑有问题。
DE对比，E不同的地方在于having been heated， 不符合习惯表达（一般不用having been done来修饰名词）

谢谢！上GMATCLUB搜了一下，有大神说“this” should refer back to ONLY the closest noun and not the entire previous clause，不知道对不对
