A- correct, began in an instant 10-20 bln years ago and has been expanding
Correct tense, past tense and present perfect tense
B- "had begun" is incorrect, no reason to use past perfect tense; "had been" is also incorrect
C- beginning was an instant, then instant that has expended - non logical
D- fragment, not a sentence after that
E- non parallel before and after "and", the part before "and" is not a sentence. thus it can not be parallel to the sentence after it
2. Shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable
A- correct; there is only one noun in front of "so as to", this is correct
B-so...so that - "so" redundant, and the meaning is not correct. "so that" indicated purpose, in order to. not correct here
C-'so that" is correct but they are unable to is not correct, because it sounds that shifts are trying to do something
D-"not to be ''indicates that shifts has motivation to do something
E- "so that" indicates that shifts has some motivation

AB are thrown out because "like" can not be used to give examples
