不是牛牛 但是试着解释一下：1. it was绝对不能省！因为如果省去it was，句意会变成state's economy和ten years ago比较。现在的Economy是不能跟十年（一个时间）进行compare的，正确想法应该是现在的state's economy和十年前的state's economy进行比对。因此，diversified than it was ten years ago = diversified than state's economy was ten years ago.
2. than that ten years ago. 我觉得可能不行 因为原句想说的是 than the econom was ten years ago. 如果that指代economy的话， 那么还缺少谓语。不知道说的对不对，请大牛们指正！
