PhD Position and MPhil Position in the

Division of Public Policy (PPOL) at the

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

Beginning August 2022


Professor Naubahar Sharif, Acting Head, Division of Public Policy, HKUST is seeking one PhD student and one MPhil student to work with him on a three-year interdisciplinary research project titled “Towards a more inclusive Hong Kong: COVID-19, mental well-being, and mitigation strategies for a multicultural elderly community”, funded and supported by the HKUST Center for Aging Science. The PhD student and the MPhil student’s program of study will be in MPhil and PhD programs in Public Policy, respectively.

Project Background

This project aims to reveal the unequal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental wellbeing of the elderly population (those aged 65 and above) in Hong Kong, based on their ethnocultural backgrounds—ethnic minorities and ethnic Chinese. This project entails different investigative activities, including: 1) conducting a comparative examination on the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on ethnic-Chinese elderly population in comparison to those of Indian, Pakistani, and Nepalese descent; 2) examining the degree of inter-ethnic variation in the unequal impacts of COVID-19 on the mental well-being of ethnic-minority elderly population from socio-economic and social capital perspectives; 3) identifying sources of emotional resilience and social/well-being support among elderly population of ethnic Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, and Nepalese origin, with a particular emphasis on their social support systems, and; 4) disseminating the findings to relevant stakeholders in Hong Kong.

Project Activities

PhD and MPhil students hired for this project will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including the principal investigator (Professor Naubahar Sharif), a postdoctoral fellow, student helpers, other co-investigators for this project, as well as external partner organizations of the project. The students will be responsible in working closely with the PI in establishing the research direction, conducting literature review, liaising with representatives of external partner organizations, engaging in data collection (primarily through focus group discussions and longitudinal surveys) and analysis, co-authoring publications, writing research grants, and other activities as required. Collaboration with other project co-investigators will be required.

Application

Applicants for the PhD and MPhil positions are preferred to have the following experience/training:

• Bachelor’s degree in any of these fields: psychology / social sciences / sociology / social policy / social work / public health / anthropology; candidates with Master’s degrees in psychology and/or social sciences will have strong competitive advantages in applying for these positions

• Comfortable performing qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, ranging from focus group discussion, survey, to interview transcripts

• Strong interest in interdisciplinary research, especially in the intersection of psychology, sociology, social policy, demography, ethnic studies, and public health

Interested candidates must apply through the MPhil/PhD registration system of the Division of Public Policy at HKUST by 30 June 2022. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview via Zoom.

Successful applicants will be expected to enroll in the respective programs and begin their study periods starting in the Fall semester – i.e. 1 September 2022 (with orientation activities to take place from the second half of August 2022 onwards).

Project Period

In accordance with PPOL guidelines, a successful PhD applicant will be appointed for a 4-year period, while a successful MPhil applicant will be appointed for a 2-year period (no extensions permitted).
