Merriam-Webster的解释，似乎也能用wil do这样的将来时啊。。不过确实用if会有歧义
6 - used to introduce a statement or question about something that is not certain
I'll see if [=whether] I can come.
Do you know if he'll come to the party?
I wonder if it's true (or not).
Frankly, I doubt if he'll pass the exams.

曼哈顿其实的讲解没问题，这里说 require a sequence,其实核心想要表达的意思是，在gmac的框架下，if 不能够当成whether来用，只能用来表示一个特定的条件。
