同意楼上，这个其实并不牵强。

介词短语，尤其是in/on/under + N. 构成介词短语的这种词组，因为既可以修饰某个名字做noun modifier，又可以做状语修饰整个句子，如地点状语，其位置的不同常常会导致句意理解的不同。这个在OG的分类里面叫做rhetotic construction，你去查一下OG的解析就能看到了。

在这道题里面，in letter既可以修饰eruption，又可以修饰wrote或者是整个句子，就容易造成歧义。如果想要避免造成歧义，那么最好的办法就是把这样的介词短语放到句首。如E选项。

我能想起来类似的题目还有，OG17里面的化石，关键词是at this stage；PREP 08 中的marine time code的那个题目，关键词是sea under the provision；还有PREP 07/08 具体记不清了，一道关于美国总统为南方作出了贡献的题目，关键词是of the south。一搜便有。
