选B。
排除法，ACD主谓不一致。E时态错误，in his own time是一个过去时的标志，不应该用现在完成时。
现在完成时的用法如下1.从过去一直持续到现在的动作(eg. I have been a teacher for 20 years.)；或者2.the completion of some action prior to the timeframe of the sentence(在这个句子里面是in his own time) (eg. Tom: Where is my apple? Bob: I have eaten it.)；或者3.过去发生的事情的影响一直持续到了现在(eg: Boss: Can you talk something about your education? Tom: I have attended college.)
关于时态的考点，语法题可以出得很难，因为不同时态间的使用所带来的差别有时可以十分微妙。

不过这题没有考到这么细，in his own time就是一个过去式的标志。consider following sentences: 1. Japan lost the war in 1945. 2. Tom was born in 1998.

BTW 关于as as的用法，如果将E中的句子补全为:
Thomas .... -- have been as disturbing in his own time as Thomas Eakins's powerful style and his choices of subject HAVE BEEN compelling for ours.
个人认为，但不是十分肯定，后面这个have been可以适用上面所讲的现在完成时的用法的第三条...
