OG 2019 第800题出现了 NOT only... , also...的用法,不同于通常人们理解 not only... , but (also) 的用法,因此查各种资料,将not only,but also. 的用法总结如下:
Not only but also 用法总结(一):
Not only… but (also)… 封闭式平行结构,所以省略号部分需要成分一样,不要有任何省略,这个结构可以连接任何平行成分,包括形容词,动词 甚至句子;
E.g.
We wore not only boots(靴子), but also sandals(凉鞋).【逗号可有可无】;【名词平行】
We wore not only boots but sandals.
A boss not only in name but in fact.【介词平行】
He not only promised but also performed.【动词平行】
Not only are you funny, but (also) you are witty.【句子平行】
在句子平行的结构当中,but 或者 but also 都可以省略,这种情况下 不用保证前后的封闭式平行;
E.g.
Not only was he ugly, he was not interesting to talk to either.[否定中的也用either]
That would not only be regrettable(令人遗憾的), it would be quiet disastrous(灾难性的).
结构里的also 也可以用 as well 代替, as well 放在句末;
only 可以用just, merely代替;
E.g.
We wore not only boots but sandals as well. [MAHATTAN : SUSPECT ]
He is not merely a good cook,he is an artist.
We wore not just boots but also sandals.

Not only but also 用法总结(二):
一 替换:
(1) not only, and (2) but (also). The (1) is occasionally written not just or not alone, while (2) is commonly seen in the forms but . . . too and but . . . as well.
E.g.
It was not just a big bear, but a grumpy one as well.
Not alone did she win the race, but she also beat the record.
He not only used a fictitious example, but he reproduced it too.
二省略:
(1)but (also) could also be written as (but) also, since but sometimes doesn’t appear either.
E.g.
He not only used a fictitious example, but he also reproduced it.
He not only used a fictitious example, he also reproduced it.
Rowers not only face backward, they race backward.
最后一句话:Doing without but or also tends to reduce formality, or to reduce stiffness in formal prose, and can benefit short and straightforward constructions.
(2)But (also) can appear by itself, without being preceded by not only:
E.g.
It depends on your point of view, but also on where you live.
The article, based on a lengthy interview with Kidd, but also on discussions with other figures in Joyce and general editorial scholarship, contained the essentials of the row which was then inevitable.
(3)Not only could have been inserted as follows: E.g. The article, based not only on a lengthy interview with Kidd, but also on discussions with other figures…
