Essays

Applicants must complete one short answer question and three essays.

Short Answer Question:
What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters maximum)

Examples of possible responses:
“Work in business development for a media company.”
“Join a strategy consulting firm.”
“Launch a data-management start-up.”

Essay 1:
Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3-5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long-term dream job? (500 words)

Essay 2:
Why do you feel Columbia Business School is a good fit for you? (250 words)

Essay 3:
Who is a leader you admire, and why? (250 words)

Optional Essay:
Is there any further information that you wish to provide the Admissions Committee? If so, use this space to provide an explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or your personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay. You may submit bullet points. (Maximum 500 Words)

Knight-Bagehot Fellows:
Rather than answer Essay 1, current Knight-Bagehot Fellows applying to Columbia Business School should use the space allocated to the first essay (500 words) to complete the Wiegers Fellowship application essay.

Wiegers Fellowship Essay Question:
What are your career goals? How has the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship affected these goals? How will an MBA help you achieve these goals? (500 words maximum)

Goal: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters)
CBS沿用多年的快问快答，50个字符要求你direct to the point，不要拖泥带水。一个完整的career goal通常包含

industry, function, location三方面的信息，应该是和你过去的经历相关，有进步，又可实现的。仿造例子中的格式写一个动名词的组合是不错的方法。

Essay #1: Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3-5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long term dream job? (500 words)

这道去年迭代过的题得以保留。中期goal这个说法还蛮unique的，实际上就是希望大家

更理性地分析之后每段工作的transferability。比如你post MBA想做banking，中期做PE，长期成立自己的fund。当然，光写goal可撑不满500字。我认为加上1）这些goal的由来 和2）实现这些goal还需要怎样的efforts 是比较靠谱的。

1）前半部分的statement颇有迷惑性，学校好像不希望你再提自己的经历，但经历本身不会说话，解释清楚几段工作/role之间的联系是什么，你做决定背后的逻辑是什么，是什么引导着你这样一路走来，是非常重要的。有这些context，别人才能理解你的goal。“path”这个词暗示了every single step should make sense，过去、现在、将来应该有机地串联起来，最好有一个清晰的主题：比如是对某个行业的focus在不同领域的探索，或者某个愿景在不断演变直至成熟等等。在walk through这些经历的时候可以总结一下你从中掌握了什么技能，如何为下一个目标去做准备。然后说future goal，要解释这对之前的经历而言extension/progression体现在哪里，让读者看清你整个职业的big picture。

2）实现goal的途径也就是why CBS。不能泛泛而谈，不能无脑地随大流蹭热度（e.g. vaule investing program in this case)，而应该充满令人信服的细节，要写出课堂内外各种资源对你而言有什么具体的意义。另外要注意personalize “why school”，保证写出来的内容是别人难以复制的。比如，你是如何得知关于学校的这一切的？是campus visit，info session，或者跟哪些校友在什么场合聊过？
