支持答案A，但有两个疑惑请大家帮着看看：

1.single locusts are quiet creatures，这样的单复数使用方式有点困惑。

2.上面几个帖子都提到E中they的指代不明，我的疑问是，placed with others of their species中，their已经出现，且可以推断为locust，则后面的they应保持与their的一致，指为locust，因此不存在指代不明的问题，不知道这样的理解对不对。

E的then是不能作为排除的理由的，我觉得考点在于locusts能否省略。通常，我们都倾向于更简洁的表达，但前提是不能产生歧义或影响理解。要注意的是E中省略的主语是single locusts而非locusts，这样导致后面的they指代的是single locusts，逻辑上显然是不通的。所以A更清楚，为优选。

我觉得很疑惑，为什么they 指代single locusts 是不对的，我觉得就是强调前面那个单个的l。

单个的l独处的时候很安静，但是放在一群l中，他们（单个的l）变的不安静。

The problem is "they". In E, you can misundertand "they" as entomologists.
