OG SC 198 pls help

198. Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A)    they had in their previous campaigns
(B)    their previous campaigns had had
(C)    they had for any previous campaign
(D)    in their previous campaigns
(E)    for any previous campaign

Answer is E.
I agree. But I think there should be a "those" before "for".
Or it should be "than it had had for ..."

Can anyone explain to me why it is valid to omit these stuffs? thanks!

如果前半句补全的话,应该是:
Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than (it had done sth. with supplies) for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
根据比较的对等原则,than 前后的部分要对等。而且出于简洁的需要,than后面省去与than前面重复的it had with supplies。如果按照你所说在 for any previous campaign前加个those,不够简洁。要省略就全省略,否则不要省。
据个例子:he looks better in blue than in green = he looks better in blue than( he does) in green.省去主语和助动词,只留下了状语去比较。和上句相似。

大家说说。

I think it should be like this:
Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies (for this time) than (it had done with supplies) for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
