关于杨鹏长难句的问题

今天在看杨鹏 里面有一个长难句让我完全懵了
“ Although qualitative variance among nerve energies was never rigidly disproved, the doctrine was generally abandoned in favor of the opposing view, namely, that nerve impulses are essentially homogeneous in quality and are transmitted as “common currency” throughout the nervous system. ”


这个句子里面的 “the doctrine was generally abandoned in favor of the opposing view, namely, that nerve impulses are essentially homogeneous in quality and are transmitted as common currency‖ throughout the nervous system. ”
我的理解是 " the doctrine in favor of the opposing view was generally abandoned"
就是说--支持对立观点的被抛弃了 （即同意前面说的）
但是这么理解是和 杨鹏的理解&句子里面的although 关系是对立的
但是感觉自己钻了牛角尖 卡不出来了
请问有大神能理一理这样理解哪里错了嘛？

that 修饰的是 the opposing view 不是 the doctrine
插入语不要看
Gmat 喜欢修饰成分紧跟着被修饰成分

"the doctrine was generally abandoned in favor of the opposing view" means the doctrine was abandoned, and the opposing view is correct.  

The doctrine = old view
The opposing view = new view
The doctrine itself is not in favor of the opposing view, in fact, it was abandoned to give way for the opposing view.

in favor of xxx 为介词词组，看成一个整体，大概翻译为：有利于xxx（in favor of不一定要硬理解为赞成，这里翻成有利于对我来说更通）
所以把它放到整个句子里，就变成，为了有利于反方换点，…
