which itself had been adapted earlier in the same century from the Phoenician alphabet. [event 3]

From the meaning we can understand that
Sequence: "event 1" happened after "event 2" happened after "event 3"
Tenses: "was" > "had been" > "had been"
Tenses: "past" > "past perfect" > "past perfect"

Since "had been (past perfect)" is used (non-underlined) for event 2, we should use "had been (past perfect)" for event 3.
(though usage of "had been" for event 2 and event 3 are not necessary as the timelines [centuries before/after] are clearly provided)

- maintains the correct tense for the correct sequence
B. adapting itself earlier
- "adapting" makes event 3 as modifier to event 2
C. itself being adapted earlier

逗号加V-ing要么修饰主语，要么修饰前面的句子，不可以修饰宾语，排除BD, CE都不完整都是itself in the same century  ，只有A合适

这个Ron说的跟GMAC的解释不矛盾。

首先：
modifier adopt the timeframe of the clause to which they are attached！
三个正确例子：
Students writing paper 150 years ago used…
Students writing paper in today’s school use…
Students writing paper twenty years in the future will

这里的意思是writing paper XX 这个modifier的时态，是跟clause的timeframe是一致的。

而题目中要求的Timeframe是跟前面from a western Greek alphabet的不一致的。

是句子意思要求两句话的timeframe不一致，并不是有语法错误。

C选项除了意思不符之外，itself 前面还应该加which that等，才能修饰Greek alphabet

itself being adapted earlier 是独立主格结构吧...我有点把独立主格和同位语搞混了，还以为可以就近修饰呢
