GMATclub论坛的解释：E：Meaning change, The text means to say that there is no single yardstick' but E says that a single yardstick(even if present) cannot measure all distances.

想问下A，你的选项是正确的吗？论坛上的A是：To estimate the expansion rate of the universe is a notoriously difficult problem because there is a lack of a single yardstick that all distances can be measured by. 我有点不理解A的错误。

哦懂A的错误了，因为介词不可以放在句子末尾，要放在前面写成by which。

1，no single yardstick 比 a lack of a single yardstick简洁  GMAT语法要点！简洁！简洁！ 简洁！  重要的事情说三遍
2，一个句子一般不用介词结尾，所以 用by which 修饰yardstick语义比较清晰
3，to do 放在句子开头不如动名词直接在开头，也是基于简洁原则
4，一般来说，句子主语最好是按原句要求不做更替 所以D项肯定是不太好的

我觉得按照gmat思路来思考的话，看看大神是不是这么觉得：

B 和D 其实是一个错误，那就是把这么重要的词当宾语，但是宾语根本就不长，没有必要用there is 或者it is 来开头。 是不是，是不是？
根据精简原则，应该直接拿主语开头，

说错了，和E. 不是D, d 的single yardstick改变原意了。 中文：根本不是一把尺子能做到的（拿尺子做不到的)， 而不是 只靠一把尺子不行（言外之意，两把就可以了）

然后说一下自己的理解：
A-- "a lack of a single yardstick" 比起 "no single yardstick" 太罗嗦
句子最后的"by", 作为preposition一般不会放在句子最后

B-- 正确答案

C-- "a lack of a single yardstick" 同A,啰嗦
第一个clause的最后"by" 放置比较尴尬（待高手纠正）

D,E --这两个选项放在一起看，因为他们都把句子的意思改变了
D的主语成了a problem而不是estimating the expansion rate，后面虽然提出了estimate the expansion rate of the universe但是更像是举例子
E的主语也是a problem（同D), 而且最后 "no single yardstick can all distances be measured" 第一语序混乱，第二偷换概念，no single yardstick can 和 no single yardstick是两个概念，前者是有yardstick但是这个yardstick不能blablabla，后者是我们压根没有yardstick（缺的就是它）
