求解OG2018 SC 735里的答案解释是什么意思

这道题其实很直接，用时态和idiom就能判断出来答案是E了，可是OG的解释中有这样一段话我实在就看不懂

B选项OG里面说用causing表示infecting the subjects with cowpox caused a mild illness only in some of the cases.
原句是：The participle causing suggests that infecting the subjects with cowpox caused a mild illness only in some of the cases - but this does not seem to be the intended meaning.
这个解释怎么理解呢？

若不是这个OG解释的指点，我也绝对没有想到这一层。
但请小伙伴们把B选项加进去通读全句，意思变为：英格兰医师EJ发现如果实验对象被故意种植cowpox，并引发轻微疾病，他们才可以对smallpoox变得免疫。
对smallpox变免疫的前提有二，第一需要种植cowpox，第二需要种植后引发轻微疾病。言下之意，并不是所有的cowpox种植都会引发轻微疾病。
我的语法太烂，不知道怎么从语法角度解释。

语法上来看的话，我想是这样的……which引导的从句只修饰前面的名词，也就是cowpox。也就是说这个从句给cowpox补充了一种叙述，“引起轻微病症”，这就是100%的情况。

而V-ing引导的从句可以有另一种解释，也就是修饰前面整个短语，而这个短语把if包含进去了。也就是说, "causing only a mild illness" = "if (infecting the subjects with cowpox) caused only a mild illness"。不知道这么强行解释有没有很牵强。不过说实话如果不是OG如此多想，我也是领会不到这层歧义的。。。

语法补充 , doing 在manhattan解释里表示adverb modifirer也就是副词修饰语 所以b答案，causing就意思就是subjects 需要种植cowpox，这一动作引发 mild illness，subjects才能对smallpox免疫 -- 跟原文的意思不同 所以b错误 我的理解是这样的
