想请问一下CD的大神们，为何选E呀？不要说排除法…一开始以为被动主语不搭就排除了e，当然现在也知道了a-d为何错，但我依然纠结的地方在于：选e与语法书上的违背了——曼哈顿6th(75页)不是说“逗号+-ed”这种形式只能够修饰句子吗？（然后没有逗号的-ed可以修饰n）

曼哈顿原文的意思恐怕是为了更好让我们理解－ed这个形式做修饰语吧
`it is better to think of this modifier as applicable to the whole main clause.` 用的是better 而非must
而且本句理解起来没有障碍啊。
其他的选项不如e合适

Past particle 只能修饰noun，并不能修饰句子，不知道你是从哪里看到你所说的rule的。

先纠正一下楼上的说法，-ED(past participle)既可以做noun-modifer也可以做adv-modifier     ，   -ed 做Noun-Modifer； comma -ed 做ADV—Modifer
其次，试着解决楼主的困惑，教材中说的是 -ed 做adv-Modifer并没有说只能修饰句子，这两者有天壤之别。

noun-Modifer只修饰名词！
adv-Modifer修饰除名词以外的几乎所有成分包括：Verb,ADV,ADJ,prepositonal phrase,clause;同时还可以回答问题例如why，how，when，where。

               She bought an expired lottery ticket.           -------------   N-Modifier
            
               Exhausted from her job, she bought a lottery ticket.     ADV-Modifer（此处也可以理解为N-modifer of her，Who was exhaused， she was.但是很多情况下如果单纯将【，-ed】 理解为N—Modifer是不合适的，所以曼哈顿原文中说 It's better to think of this Modifer as applicable to the whole clasue）例子Exhaused from her job，she has red hair. GMAT绝对不接受这样的表达方式。
                                                                                                     
                             以上总结全部来自于曼哈顿6教材（我的是62页),部分为中文翻译过来，英文部分基本是原文没有修改。

楼主的问题， earned at a time when..........。  做的是ADV-Modifer，修饰前面的句子发挥状语的作用。（在我看来理解为时间状语比较合适，回答when is this action oocurred）

如理解有误，希望指出。

我也比较晕这个comma ed 的用法
这是RON manhattan 论坛里回帖 （13年）
in general, "comma + __ed" can describe the noun directly in front of it, but can also describe the subject (James collapsed onto the couch, exhausted from a long day at work).
这个是我问问题 一个群里的人回复的Fossils of the arm of a sloth, found in Puerto Rico in 1991, have been dated at 34 million years old, making the sloth the earliest known mammal on the Greater Antilles Islands.
这里comma ed 修饰的就是前面noun  fossils

还有这句话
Initiated on Columbus Day 1992 ,five centuries after Europeans arrived in the New World ,project SETI pledged a 100 million investment in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence
我觉得这里面initiated 也是修饰noun

（这个例子收回来）这个是adverbial modifier 回答的是when project pledged......,而且这个也不是comma ed
