我觉得应该选择E.

我的理由

(1)冒号有个功能，就是解释前面的内容。

（2）冒号后相当于，because they(Dolphins )have (省略了) a complicated system of whistles, squeaks, moans, trills, and clicks produced by sphincter muscles inside the blowhole.

E更好，但是那位能讲讲but nevertheless 连用的道理，我在google里倒是搜到了他们俩连用的句子。可是感觉but 和 nevertheless 用一个就好了，两个一起用觉得多余。

你说的很有道理。我也这样想过。

可是，其他的答案好像问题更大。E是否可以理解为but后面是某个句子的省略，而将but 看作连词呢？刚刚搜到的句子。but在此应该是连词。
