我觉得应该选D吧。
首先，thus是一个连词，是不能连接两句句子的，所以不可以直接跟is。
因此可以排除A/C

接着看So的用法，and 后面再跟So感觉怪怪的，so不是可以直接连接两句句子的么
所以感觉D更好一点

"Theory of mind"前面不应该有冠词，去掉c和e。

"And so"和”and thus”里面的and都是多余，wordy选项，去掉。

剩下a。

举个例子。

He comes from Africa, thus is not white. 正确

He comes from Africa, and thus/so is not white。错误。and是想链接啥呢？
And是代表并列的关系，题目中前半句和后半句是因果关系，所以这个and使用是错误的。

首先说下这个题的source 是OG17 Verbal分册SC296。答案是D

其次关于这个题，domain of sth是不需要article的, 排除C/E
关于thus的用法，我查了下collins, 只能做adv，不能做conj.
例句：even in a highly skilled workforce some people will be more capable and thus better paid than others.

ron大神说过and确实是表示连接的是两件independent & separate things，但如果想要表示两件事之间的关系，比如因果等，有两种方式：一是用“comma + VERBing”, 二是在and之后加adverb，比如Thus／So／Therefore／As a result／Consequently／Resultantly 。D就是用了第二种方式来communicate relationship.

在LONGMAN上查了一下thus的用法，分享一下好了：
(adverb)
1. as a result of somethings that you have just mentioned.
e.g.: Most of the evidence was destroyed in the fire. Thus it would be almost impossible to prove him guilty.
2. in this manner or way
e.g.: They diluted the drug, thus reducing its effectiveness.

My thoughts as follows:

A: “thus” functions as subject of the sentence "thus is best studied as part of the field animal cognition". It is wrong since "thus" is adverb. If "thus" here doesn't function as subject, then it is not a complete sentence, lacking subject. So, D use "and" to connect two parts and let "the type of behavior..." be the subject of the latter part.

C: "thus" functions as "adverb", and it cannot be used to connect two sentences.

B/E: I think we don't need "to be" here, but I can't tell why.

thus不是连词哦，是副词，不可以连接句子的。

Thus 就像是however,
So就像是but
