Frequently Asked Questions ●Is it better to submit an application for one of the early deadlines? We try to distribute our offers of admission in proportion to the percentage of applications that we receive in each application round. However, applicants who wish to be considered for scholarship or fellowship must apply for admission by the stated scholarship deadline date. We strongly encourage international applicants to both the two-year and TMO programs to apply in the Priority, Round 1 or Round 2 application deadlines to ensure they are able to obtain student visas in a timely manner. Students who are notified of their admission by March 31 will be invited to attend Destination Johnson - our welcome weekend in April.
●Where can I get a paper application? We strongly prefer the use of our on-line application. However, you may download a pdf version of our application. To use this feature, you must register to download the pdf version here.
●What are the prerequisites for admission to the Johnson School? All applicants must provide prior academic performance at an accredited college or university with the minimum of a U.S. bachelor's degree or the international equivalent for the two-year program; the minimum of a U.S. master's degree in a physical or natural science, quantitative economics, computer science, engineering/technology or the international equivalent for the Twelve-Month Option. All applicants are required to take the GMAT and TOEFL or IELTS (if applicable). If you are unsure about your qualification, please contact us at mba@cornell.edu.
GMAT: The application is not complete until we receive the official test scores from the Educational Testing Service. All applicants are required to take the GMAT. To schedule testing call 800-GMAT-NOW (U.S. and Canada) or 609-771-7330 (outside the U.S.), or visit www.mba.com. GMAT scores are valid for five (5) years. The Johnson School MBA code for the GMAT is 2098. All questions about testing should be addressed to Graduate Management Admission Test.
English Language Proficiency Assessment: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS, academic module) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. Exceptions: 1) Those who hold a four-year degree from a university in which the curriculum is taught exclusively in English are exempt from taking the test; and 2) those who have been working full time in a country whose native language is English for the past consecutive three or more years may request a waiver from taking the test by contacting the admissions office.
TOEFL scores must be sent directly to the Johnson School (code 2098) by ETS. Check the TOEFL website, www.toefl.org for information regarding this exam. IELTS, managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia requires test takers to request the test center where they were examined to send a test report from directly to the receiving institution. Check the IELTS website, www.ielts.org for information on this exam. Results of both tests are valid for two years.
On the TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 on the CBT (600 paper) is required, with a preferred minimal score of 5 on the TWE. On the IELTS, a minimum score band of 7 is required with preferred minimal scores of 7 on the speaking and writing modules.
●What types of scholarships and fellowships are available at the Johnson School? The Johnson School has over $1 million in merit-based scholarship funds to award each year to new and returning students. Almost 30 percent of Johnson School students receive some scholarship assistance. Candidates wishing to be considered for merit-based scholarships must apply in the priority, first or second admissions decision periods. Decisions on scholarship recipients are made after an offer of admission is made. All our scholarships are awarded based on merit regardless of citizenship.
In addition to our merit-based scholarships, we have Park Leadership Fellowships, which provide up to twenty-five full-tuition plus stipend awards each year. Park Fellows are selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership abilities, a record of community service, and academic achievement. Park Leadership Fellowships are only open to U.S. citizens who have completed the Park essay and are accepted in the priority, first or second admissions decision period.
●How do I re-apply to the Johnson School MBA program? Applicants must submit a new application, all supporting materials and complete the re-applicant essay. Applications from previous years do not remain on file. Application requirements vary from year to year. The new application is typically available mid-August for the new application cycle.
●May I defer my admission if I cannot enroll the year in which I am admitted? The Johnson School does not offer deferred admission. However, you may re-apply to the program.
●May I transfer credits from another MBA program, or from courses taken at other schools, and reduce the time required to complete the Johnson School program? We do not accept transfer credits from other MBA programs. The Johnson School discourages applications from candidates who have already received an MBA (or the equivalent) at another institution or who have completed substantial graduate course work in business.
●How is a Johnson School interview conducted? An invitation to interview will be offered to select candidates after a review of the completed application. The decision to grant an interview is at the discretion of the admissions committee and may not be arranged by the candidate.
●May I tour the school and sit in on a class? We encourage prospective students to visit the Johnson School to meet students, sit in on a class and tour the campus. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid conducts frequent information sessions that include such topics as our application process, admission criteria, and an overview of the Johnson MBA program. Please check our Visits and Interviews Section (requires login) for dates, times, and locations of our information sessions.
●May I begin the MBA program in the spring semester? Due to our integrated curriculum, we only admit students to the fall semester (August) for the two-year MBA program and in the summer (May) for our Twelve Month Option program. Our on-line view book offers a description of the Johnson School's curriculum.
●Do you offer a part-time MBA or an Executive MBA? We do not offer a part-time MBA at the Johnson School. We do, however, offer an EMBA (see degrees and programs).
