1. the main problem of Columbia Stat is not only "too many Chinese student + cash cow", but also her admission requirement and core course.
This is a master for those with a bit math (calculus and lin algebra only), and therefore they have to spend all the core in teaching some senior undergraduate level stat stuffs. As a result, 40% of the master is gone with the wind already........
this is also the reason why able to do similar course as MAFN core is hard to be said as a pro too.........it is becuase MAFN core is also known to be too mathematical and fundmental, and the best solution is to use the elective to take those advanced course in IEOR.......
if you use your electives to proxy those math course in MAFN, where is the space to proxy to advanced level math fin course?
normally a P quant will required way more and advance statistics that is within the scope of this "master" of statistics, i.e. most likely being kicked out in technical interviews.......
2. of course, who cares what your dad said? well, unless he is a professional in the field exactly you want.
P.S. do agree that this is not a easy decision...........
P.S.2 dont think that there exist any well-structured program solely focuing on quantiative trading yet. The current existing MFE are more on pricing and risk side. (various derivative models, risk measure and adjustments)
and the best preparation for P side trading is statistics + CS.
Therefore, one has to choose only one out of the title "finance" vs the content for the foundation of quantitative trading, which is most likely a stat or a CS master, a solid one of course, and then pick up the right electives oneself.
