求助，海星那道题，with的用法

我大概懂了，海星不是故意要长出多余的胳膊。

我现在想的是：

这里with和by都是做状语吧，怎么修饰noun？

同意，by的句意错。

另外，逗号+growing结构是修饰前面的句子主语或整句话，无法修饰by overcompensatin ...

我之前也认为comma+ving不能修饰前面modifier，你看看这个例子：Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives, capitalized on her keen observation and love of the natural world. 如果coordinating可以越过in her book illustrations修饰BP，那么句子应该是正确的，但这是错误答案，所以我推测comma ving或许可以修饰前面任何成分，不一定是句子或从句。你怎么看？

做状语应该修饰整个句子: it is quickly replaced.

逗号+Ving结构类似副词修饰前面句子主语或整个句子，这个跳跃修饰的前提是逗号前面有句子哦！

你举得例子中，coordinating前面没有句子，所以它变成类似于形容词词组的modifier，应该紧跟修饰对象Beatrix。
而它被in her bookillustration这个modifier隔开了，导致句意混淆。
