这是因为不能加they.如果加they,会造成run-on. 如果确实要加they的话,需要在but前加个逗号,否则run-on.

Protecting应该是表示伴随结果.

不是吧！解释中intrusive means "they"must be omitted. but 是连词，这和有没有they无关，况且evolved 本身就是谓语，照楼上说的c项不也open了吗？

我觉得

第一个：not but结构，这个结构只有一个主语，所以不能有they

第二个：是对前面的具体的解释.
