此题中
是discovery determine how and when 还是 clues determine how and when？
如果to determine要做目的状语，又不与宾补混淆的话，应该把To determine放在最前面： To determine how and when, the discovery provide clues. 但是这题discovery是宾语从句中的主语，写成To determine how and when, scientists claim that...逻辑主语又错了，写成Scientists claim that to determine how and when,  discovery...也不好。最好的办法就是用for determing或者用in order to determine.最后选E
