Both of the comparision are correct -
Q104: Prices are higher this year than last year.
Q90: Prices are higher now than those of a year ago.
For instance, all of the following are correct -
I eat more than Tom .
I eat more than Tom does.
I eat more in the restaurants than at home.
The reasons that pick up choice A as correct one for Q104 are:
- "higher....over" is not right, so eliminate B, D.
- Chocie C: 1) the comparision is "expectations" vs. "last year's". 2) "last year's" is not correct.
- Choice E: 1) "last year's" is not correct. 2) "Refiners pay $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did." is not correct. It should be " Refiners pay $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they did".
For Q90 :
- "higher.... as" eliminate D and E;
-Choice A: The meaning of the sentence talks about the present situation : Prices now are only slightly higher than a year ago; flodds and drought are hurting crops; Consequently, the prices are raising. So, the past tense " raised" is not correct.
- Choice C means " Prices are only slightly higher now than a year ago and (prices) are hurting crops and therefore raising corn prices." You can find the purple part is totally wrong. |
