In my personal understanding, there is no absolute. Master in Economics is more preferred, because there will be advanced microeconomics, econometrics, statistics and math courses choices that will help you in phd study. If you can do great job in PhD-level microeconomics and econometrics courses, it will make you more competitive. Anyway, Master program is just one aspect of evaluating application to Phd in Finance.

thanks for the opinion.

I also heard that there are extensive courses in econ in phd first 2 years. however considering my current background, i don;t think i will have a competitive advantage when applying for master in econ?

do you know any master in finance program that is more research oriented?

Thanks.

Most master of science in finance programs are practitioner-oriented. You will learn basic knowledge about corporate finance, M&A, derivatives, banking and portfolio management. They all are not research oriented. However, a good MSF program will give you better understanding about Finance and also bring you access to more resources, like your professors. You can work with them in research to some extent. These conditions will help you for sure.

I agree. most finance programs, and mfe are industry oriented.
There is the trade off, the high cost of going for a master, and the academic resources I can get from it.

Hi, if you want to do a PhD in Finance, perhaps MSc in Finance and Economics at LSE is a good preparation.

sorry, haven't been on the forum for a long time. Thanks for your advise, and I agree that it will be a good prep. I found out the program quite late, not sure if there are still vacancies now.

I think there will be some places, but it's more difficult to enter now because I know many guys have got admitted to this program. Have a try! It's a wonderful program for PhD in Finance.
