为什么答案是E呢？C为什么不对？merging the nuclei的施动者不就是Nuclear fusion 吗？

句子的结构是Nuclear fusion is the force that powers.... and mergers....。这里powers和mergers并列，直接排除A、B和C；D改变了题目的意思，所以答案是E。

可是如果是两个动词并列修饰前面的the force ，就是说force 才可以 merges the nuclei of atoms, 那么在其后的unlike atomic reactors that split them apart中，that split them apart明显是修饰atomic reactors 的，是原子反应堆将核子聚合在一起的，并不是它反应时产生的力量啊。如果句子结构确实如楼上所言，那是不是也应该在atomic reactors 之前加一个that of,以表示unlike的两个对象具有可比性？

我是学工科的，学过一点相对论的皮毛和有质量和能量之间的关系，这个连接是我写的一些关于这道题的常识，希望大牛们看一下，也许有助于分析。我个人不赞同powers.... and mergers....这种并列，因为这两个动作根本不是在说一回事。merger是force的来源,是微观的。power是现象。

如果这个题是阅读题，那么他肯定是个现象解释型文章。

再补充说细一点吧，把两个微粒A、B merger之后产生的新微粒C的质量有以下关系：

M(a)+M(b)>M(c), 那么，merger前后的质量差去哪里了呢？这种合并产生了核能。爱因斯坦说：E=mc2,质量变为能量，点燃了太阳、星辰、氢弹！
