Thanks for reaching out! And it sounds like you're quite confused, so I'm here to help The good news is, you are already asking all of the right questions, which means you're on a good path. Now, let's just answer them, shall we?
You've got some GREAT stuff going for you already: Solid GMAT score, you're living/working in the US, you have leadership experience, you're female. Those things, if you leverage them properly, will work FOR you in this process.
And you're right, you gotta differentiate. When you're targeting TOP programs, you need to show why you're better than the rest. But before we focus on that, the biggest issue I can see right now is your career goals. You don't really have any! And the career goals are the foundation of the MBA application. If those aren't strong, the application will implode.
So that's where we need to start, madame. You already have a PhD, so the adcom is going to wonder why you need an MBA now. I understand, on a personal level, why you want an MBA: you want to do something different. But that's not enough to get in. The adcom needs to know that you have a very CLEAR path in mind, and you know exactly what you want... and the only way to get there is with an MBA. They need to believe that you're going to get a job when you graduate, and the best way to guarantee that is to show that you know EXACTLY what job you want, and the MBA is your chance to get there.
So you need to talk about a SPECIFIC job you want, in a SPECIFIC company. "I want change" is not gonna get you in. "I want to leverage AAA experience from my past, and pair that with BBB knowledge I'm going to get in YOUR program, to get YYY job at ZZZ company." It needs to be THAT specific. Even MORE so because you already have a PhD. Everything needs to tie together: your previous work experience, your previous degrees AND your future goals. That's not easy, of course, but in order to be competitive at M7 (and Wharton, especially), that's what needs to happen.
Now, I can't tell you (with this limited info) what your goals should be, or how to differentiate yourself, but message me on We Chat and we can talk more, and we can figure out a good plan for ya. I'm always happy to dig in and help however I can!
