would和should这个语言点的分析我看懂了，可是不明白解释中的第一句（即highlight的这句），为什么them没有被指代的先行词，难道不是“The British Admiralty and the War Office”吗？

the n and n office  单数名词，them无法指代。不要被迷惑。

A中两个them指代不一致。第二个them看起来像指代attempt，也是单数。所以说没有指代对象。

我不觉得这是一个单数名词
首先，这里不是the n and n office，而是the n and the n，如果是一个单数名词，war office前不能有the；例如the writer and editor of this book is A，指的才是A是这本书的作者及编者（作者及编者是一个词）

其次，如果是一个名词，后面的met何解？我理解的是The British Admiralty和The War Office碰在一起……

(A)  .og的解释说的时them没有指代,而不是they,they的确指代The British Admiralty and the War Office是两个单位.但在一句话中they和them指代对象应该一致,也就是说应该是同一个指代对象的主格和宾格.而them就不合理了. how they(两个单位) would have to act militarily to deal with them(两个单位)逻辑不通.而不是你说的The British Admiralty and the War Office是一个单数名词.

我觉得Ａ选项中的they是指the n and the n ,而后面的them显然不是指它们的~应该是指那个attempt

所以指代不一样显然是错的~所以就用了an event来指代了attempt这个名词短语..
