sodium

(B) reducing the
reliance on processed foods containing often hidden but significant amounts of

(C) a reduction of
the reliance on processed foods, containing as they do often hidden sodium in
significant amounts

(D) a reduced
reliance on the significant amounts of hidden sodium often contained in
processed foods(E)

Following the nutrition board’s advice on salt consumption would mean a virtual end of the use of salt in cooking, an avoidance of obviously salty foods, and reducing the reliance on
processed foods that contain significant amounts of often hidden sodium
.

Following the nutrition board’s advice on salt consumption; 谓语would mean;后面三个并列短语做宾语。而题目中化线部分显然不与a virtual end of the use of salt in cooking, an avoidance of obviously salty foods并列,因此必须从选项中找出与这两个短语形式相近的名词短语。排除A、B。

注意区别a reduction of the reliance on processed foods与a reduced reliance on processed foods意义的不同

以及体会E中relience on processed foods that contain significant but often hidden amounts of sodiuma这种表达方式比起C、D的简洁、有效、避免歧义

One view of the economy contends that a large drop in oil prices should evetually lead to lowereing interest rates, as well as lowering fears about inflation, a rally in stocks and bonds, and a weakening of the dollar.

B  a lowering of interest rates and of fears about inflation

The economic forces which may affect the new public offering of stock include sudden dowturns in the market, hedging and other investor strategies for preventing losses, lossening the interest rates in Washington, and fearing that the company may still be undercapitalized.

E  a lossening of the interst rates in Washington, and a fear that the company may still be undercapitalized.

这题D选项容易误选- a lossening of the interst rates in Washington, and a fear of the still undercapitalized company

注意区别a reduction of the reliance on processed foods与a reduced reliance on processed foods意义的不同

在英文表达上,很少会用a reduction of 加动作性的抽象名词(比如reliance), 而且a reduced relience on比起OF结构更简洁。

a reduction of the reliance和a virtual end of the use 的用法不是一样的吗?

C最后的分词结构containing as they do often hidden sodium in significant amounts好像也没有大问题啊。修饰processed food。

containing (as they do 如它们contain的那样)often hidden sodium in significant amounts。

as they do 在这里多余吗?

hi, laipiyu

2楼的已经说了, a reduction of the reliance on processed foods与a reduced reliance on processed foods意义不同

因为a reduction of the reliance 核心词在于reduction,强调的是reduction的过程/动作 而

并且从平行的前两个成分来看, a virtual end of the use of salt in cooking, an avoidance of obviously salty foods, 要说对称, reliance作核心词更能匹配end/avoidance

不知道是不是因為"containing as they do often hidden sodium in significant
amounts"是非限制修飾processed foods, 如果把"containing as they do often hidden
sodium in significant amounts"拿掉, 原句變成說a reduction on (any) processed
foods.
E中的"that"令到泛指的"processed foods"變成特指的"processed foods that...".

234. The physical structure of the human eye
enables it to sense light of wavelengths up to 0.0005 millimeters;

infrared radiation, however, is invisible because its
wavelength--0.1 millimeters--is too long to be registered by the eye.

(A)  infrared radiation, however, is invisible because its
wavelength--0.1 millimeters--is too long to be registered by the eye

(B)   however, the wavelength of infrared radiation--0.1
millimeters--is too long to be registered by the eye making it invisible

(C)  infrared radiation, however, is invisible because its
wavelength--0.1 millimeters--is too long for the eye to register it

(D)  however, because the wavelength of infrared radiation is 0.1
millimeters, it is too long for the eye to register and thus invisible

(E)   however, infrared radiation has a wavelength of 0.1 millimeters
that is too long for the eye to register, thus making it invisible

    Choice
A, the best answer, is clear, idiomatic, and grammatically correct. In B, the
misplaced participial phrase making it invisible modifies eye
rather than wavelength, thus producing a confusing statement that
distorts the meaning. In C, D, and E the use of the second it is so
imprecise as to be confusing. Furthermore, in D, and thus invisible
incorrectly modifies wavelength rather than infrared radiation. Choice E
produces an illogical statement by using a restrictive clause introduced by that
where a comma followed by the nonrestrictive "which" is required:
a
wavelength of 0.1 millimeters that is too long
nonsensically suggests that
not all wavelengths
of 0.1 millimeters are too long for the eye to
register.

Edit: removed 237 because I think that the explanation is not very precise.

(C) a reduction of
the reliance on processed foods, containing as they do often hidden sodium in
significant amounts

(D) a reduced
reliance on the significant amounts of hidden sodium often contained in
processed foods

(E) a reduced
reliance on processed foods that contain significant but often hidden amounts
of sodium

C虽然前面对称很工整,但是as they do确实是罗索,加上often修饰有歧义。

Following the nutrition board’s
advice on salt consumption would mean a virtual end of the use of salt in
cooking
, an avoidance of obviously salty foods, and a reduced
reliance on the significant amounts of hidden sodium often contained in
processed foods
