I am from USC(engineering school, not marshall school though), let me tell you something about California and USC.
Compared to UCLA, USC marshall school is not that good but good enough to locate a job in California. In Los Angeles area, USC is respected in industry.
But, to be honest, USC's business school's placement can not be compared to UCLA. I took several courses in marshall school and some training courses in UCLA. I have to say, overall, UCLA's students have better background and are more talented
you can check from recent student placement history. not too many global companies went to USC, but almost all those big name companies went to UCLA.
Ok, I just compare USC to UCLA. Now I will tell you something positive. First, you still can locate job in Los Angeles easily. And I do believe that UIUC is hard for jobhunting. Because I know lots of guys from second or even third tier B schools finally came to LA to look for jobs and finally they all landed a job. So job market in CA is good and USC is also well respected, wont be hard for you to locate an interview.
Life style in USC is very active, there are almost 1000 chinese students in USC, most of them are in engineering, science but they are not nerds  )
USC's neighbourhood is not good, compared to UCLA. But it is OK, as long as you don't go back home at 2:00 am ). Actually I live around USC now.
The rent is high though, compared to UIUC. normally a room in a big house is around $500. and a one-bed room is hitting $1000 this summer.
many students move to New Chinatown after they get a car. New chinatown is the cleanest and safest in north america, and it is very large. I bet after you come here, you will be surprised. Just like China!!
You can get anything you like uin China.some people may say that this environment is not good for you to practise english. You may just live around campus to go to chinatown during weekend. or you can live in santa monica, it is fantastic place to enjoy beach, sunchine. So LA has more fun definitely.
anyway, if you can not go to top school, USC is a good choice and may even be the best among second tier schools ( if top 15 is first tier and top 30 is second tier) because of its location, strong alumni network in southern california and potential ( USC is booming in recent years, engineering school jumped from No. 15 to No. 6 in 2004, and this year continues to be No.7 in America, tied with California Tech, urbanning, film, communication schools are top 3 in america, Marshall also hired a new dean in 2004, who was in UW-seattle, and she made that school become top 30 from top 50 in last 5 years) You will also be alumni of George lucas, O.J. Simpson etc etc. You will be proud of USC scientists virture reality technology, which is demonstrated in 007-tomorrow never dies ( i was volunteer of that technology demo )
oh, almost forgot, if you want to get into enterainment management or real estate , USC is better than UCLA because of its strong film, communication, and planning school.
Alright, it is your choice whether to join usc or not but definitely you will be proud of USC and proud of being member of Trojan's family.
Trojan is simbol of USC, USC is called Trojan's family. We are national football champion in 2004. Whenever you talk to sb. about football, we say:
