我的问题是：1、ETS为什么说“a method of protecting would be more idiomatic than a method to protect in A”？to protect 放在 a method之后做定语表示目的不行吗？

2、B中的as为什么不对呢？看了以前的讨论还是不太明白。

to do表示主语动作的目的，a method to do sth不合乎逻辑，因为a method不能表达to do这个目的，我们可以说Hegave me a suggestion to let me know...，因为主语he是可以连接to do这个目的的，所以a methodof结构中of后的成分作定语解释method的内容是比较合理的表达；

as a method protecting显然是个状语成分，而状语是修饰句子的，所以，animal-hide shields wereessential items这个主句结构和as a methodprotecting这个状语成分就显得不配合，因为主句仅仅表达shields是个东西，而不是method；或许我们可以换一种能够接受的表达：They used animal-hid shields to defend enemies, a method ....
