It is the popular wisdom that we can't save every endangered species, after all, time, money and other resources are limited, so they must be used to function to be the best. But when it comes to circumscribe the protected species to those endangered by human beings, I suspect the directness and effectiveness of this path. Meanwhile, I would like to allocate some bets on several other approaches as important as suffering from human activities in my perspectives.
I concede that there are several merits in the author's claim. To begin with, it is the standard practice for people to choose species to protect rather than protect all. It is universally acknowledged that there are so many plants and animals become extinction every day, and the cost of protecting them all can be really unimaginable. Secondly, some species extinct because natural selection. In these cases, there's neither necessary nor possible to save them. Thirdly, not all extinction is a bad thing, some extinction species just exerting detrimental influence in the whole environment. However, the speaking unfairly generalizes that we should make efforts to save endangered species only if they are endangered by human activities, which completely lose the true meaning of keeping natural balances. In fact, for some case, identifying whether the extinction is caused by human is impossible under the current circumstances. Also, some connections between human activities and natural change are not so obvious but they do harm the species. What's more important, some endangered species are precious, they may bear many valuable characters. For example, pandas are lovely though their danger are not directly caused by human beings.
The vital judgment, in my opinion, should depend on a case-by-case analysis. Whether the protection is ultimately beneficial to society is difficult to judge and finally up to our understanding of the meaning of human responsibility to the nature they lived in.
All in all, if we can find a method which can both save the endangered while meet the need of saving money, we would have the chance to reduce debate on this issue. This task is open-ended and it will never be solved. But a conscious effort to crack these hard nuts will definitely be helpful.
