gwd 7- 40 遗留问题
Q40:

Since February, the Federal Reserve has raised its short-term interest rate target five times, and because of the economy’s continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target will be raised again in November.

  1. because of the economy’s continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target will

  2. with the economy’s strength continuing, analysts predicted for weeks that the target

  3. because the economy continues strong, analysts predicted for weeks that the target would

  4. due to the economy’s continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target

  5. due to the fact of the economy’s continued strength, analysts predicted for weeks that the target will

    刚看讨论帖,有选A\C\D的,但好像都有缺陷
    个人觉得A好一点
    觉得应该用because of
    大家有什么意见啊?

刚看见老外解释的because of due to
给大家参考下

The word pairs “because of” and “due to” are not interchangeable. The reason they are not is that they “grew up” differently in the language.
“Because of” grew up as an adverb; “due to” grew up as an adjective. Remember that adjectives modify only nouns or pronouns, whereas adverbs usually modify verbs. (The fact that adverbs occasionally modify other adverbs or even adjectives and entire phrases is not relevant to this particular discussion.)
To be more precise, with their attendant words, “due to” and “because of” operate as adjectival and adverbial prepositional phrases. To understand how the functions of “due to” and “because of” vary, look at these sentences.
1. His defeat was due to the lottery issue.
2. He was defeated because of the lottery issue.
In sentence #1, his is a possessive pronoun that modifies the noun defeat. The verb “was” is a linking verb. So, to create a sentence, we need a subject complement after the verb “was.” The adjectival prepositional phrase “due to the lottery issue” is that complement, linked to the  subject by “was.” Thus, it modifies the noun defeat.
But in sentence #2, the pronoun "he" has become the sentence's subject. The verb is now “was defeated.” As reconstructed, “He was defeated” could in fact be a complete sentence. And “due to” has nothing to modify. It's an adjective, remember? It can't very well modify the pronoun “he,” can it?
Neither can it refer to “was defeated” because adjectives don't modify verbs. Sentence 2, therefore, should read: “He was defeated because of the lottery issue.” Now the “why” of the verb “was defeated” is explained, properly, by an adverbial prepositional phrase, “because of.”
In informal speech, we probably can get by with such improper usage as “His defeat was because of the lottery issue,” and “He was defeated due to the lottery issue.” But we shouldn't accept that kind of sloppiness in writing. We don't want to look stupid among those in the audience who know better. If we show them we don't care about the language, how can we expect them to believe us when we tell them that we care about the facts?

PP虽然权威,但不一定是对的,我们得根据语意来判断。

predict这个词本身只是个点动作,他不可能持续。

Data Raise New Fears Of Inflation

Fears of inflation and robust economic growth were rekindled in financial markets yesterday by two fresh economic reports, which sent stock and bond prices sharply lower.

Analysts said the new economic data increased the likelihood that the Federal Reserve would move soon to raise short-term interest rates -- perhaps as early as Friday -- and could move them higher than previously expected over the next six months.

An October survey of purchasing managers at more than 300 industrial companies showed that production had reached its highest level since December 1987. And the Government reported that construction spending posted its biggest gain in six months during September.

By the end of the day, the Dow Jones industrial average had fallen 44.75 points, to 3,863.37. [ Page D8. ] Long-term bond prices plunged while long-term interest rates, which move in the opposite direction, surged back above 8 percent, to 8.06 percent. [ Page D17. ]

As recently as Friday, stock and bond traders seemed comfortable with the idea that the economy could grow at a relatively strong clip without a surge in inflation.

That sanguine view seemed to develop after the Commerce Department reported on Friday that the economy grew at a 3.4 percent clip in the third quarter while inflation remained in check. The report sent stock prices higher and the yield on the 30-year bond back below 8 percent.

The reverse in course yesterday seems to reflect how nervous investors are about inflation and how unsure they are about the economic outlook. That uncertainty makes it easy for the market to shift its course sharply from day to day as it digests new economic data.

As the first report on economic conditions during the month just ended, the purchasing managers survey is closely watched by private analysts and policy makers. Yesterday's report shows a manufacturing sector that not only was strong during October, but, the analysts say, shows no signs of slowing down.

"The strength of the manufacturing numbers greatly reinforces the probability the Fed will increase short-term rates by half a percentage point in November," said Paul D. Mastroddi, a managing director at J. P. Morgan & Company. "And it raises the possibility the pace of interest rate hikes may be accelerated over the next three months to six months."

Because of the economy's continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the Fed would raise its short-term interest rate target again in November, most likely after its policy-making Open Market Committee meets on Nov. 15. Since February the Fed has raised its target for the overnight Federal funds rate five times, or by 1.75 percentage points, to 4.75 percent currently.

呵呵,那老外意思是

Because of 有副词的感觉,而due to有形容词的感觉,而形容词只修饰名词或动词,副词则多修饰动词(此处就不谈副词修饰形容词之类的问题了,与我们讨论它俩区别无关)

看那两个例句

1.His defeat was due to the lottery issue.

2.He was defeated because of the lottery issue.

你发现没?在句子1中用的是due to,句中,his是个所有格代名词,修饰defeatwas是个连缀动词,为了组织好这个句子,我们需要一个主语补足语在was后面,due to the lottery issue充当了此角色,与主语通过was连接。因此,其修饰那个名词defeat~

而句子2中,代词he是主语,动词was defeated实际上“He was defeated”就是个完整的句子了,而为了解释was defeated的原因,就用了有副词性质的because of

在不正式的用语中,我们可以混乱两词,写成“His defeat was because of the lottery issue,” and “He was defeated due to the lottery issue.”

但是,在正式写作中,这样是不对的。

We don't want to look stupid among those in the audience who know better. If we show them we don't care about the language, how can we expect them to believe us when we tell them that we care about the facts?(这个不翻译了哈)
