Whether people can learn more from watching television than reading books? Different people will have different ideas due to their specific background and personal experience. As far as I am concerned, I strongly disagree with the idea that people can learn more from watching television than reading books. The reasons are as follows.
Firstly, the main function of TV is always considered as amusement. So, most programs in TV are for amusement rather than for education. When we are tired and want to look for something fun, we will always think about turn on our TV. For example, the most popular program in TV is always TV play, such as a recently new one XXX. When people talk about TV, most of them concentrate on stars and new plays. Contrarily, the main function of book is education. While people thinking about reading books, they always want to learn something from the books.
Secondly, another equivalently crucial ground is that, the contents of most programs in TV are arts, sometimes they are not true. However, it is probably that people would like to learn from these programs. To attract eyes and earn much more money, some programs in TV would exaggerate the story. This will do harm to ordinary people especially to children. And TV is more accessible than books for children because you can choose proper books for them to read. However, TV is hard to be controlled to broadcast needed programs.
Finally, TV is addicting. If people spend long time on TV, especially for children, they will be likely to be addict to TV. There is a statistic that XX people spend more than X hour one day in front of TV. This is a terrible figure. We can’t image a common people can spent so much time on TV. From my own experience, I feel the time in front of TV spend quicker than time on other things. But after watching that, I found I learn nothing from it. However, by reading books, people can use their time more effectively to learn more.
Admittedly, some people who applaud for the opposite position would argue that there are also some useful programs in TV and people can also learn a lot from TV. In fact, I also partly agree with them. It is true that there are lots of useful programs in TV especially for some education channel, such as Nature channel. However, we have to consider the efficiency of learning knowledge from TV. Using same time, people can learn much more by reading books. Because, we learn from books when we are children and we will always reading books in quiet environment.
In conclusion, I disagree with the position that people can learn more from watching television than reading books. Watch TV is time costing, the programs are always be exaggerated, and it is easier to create addict on TV. For learning knowledge, reading books is a more effective way than watching TV.
