It is generally agreed that society benefits from the
work of its members. Compare the contributions of artists to society with the
contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think
is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.

    

The argument about who contribute more to the society
never stops because both scientists and artists have done a lot good for the
people on the earth. However, a fact should not be overlooked: scientists do
more to make people's life more comfortable and more convenient.

    

Scientists make various inventions and innovations to
make people's life easier. With out the great inventors in history, such as
Tomas Edison, who led the first usable bulb light to the world, people may still
live in a dark world with only a few torch burning. If Bell didn't realize the
original telephone, the technique of communication couldn't have developed so
fast as to the point that almost one people in a hundred owns a cell phone in
the globe. Accustomed to innumerable inventions in our daily lives, such as the
vehicle the television, the elevator, we will feel quite inconvenient and
annoying without them.

    

 

    

Scientists also help people work more efficiently. With
the discovery of new methods and new techniques, people now work thousands
times than before. Take the computer for example, it takes only a few minutes
for the latest software to locate the most fragile and vulnerable part in a
huge dam; while in the past, when the computer had not been utilized widely,
only an aged and experienced expert could name it, and in most cases, it could
take a year to observe and calculate before giving the final report. With the
same computer, workers in long distance can send messages and files through
email to each other, and work can be done in the shortest time. In a word,
scientists, by developing new machines and techniques, have promoted the most favorable
work environment for people in the history.

    

 

    

Another significant progress made by scientists is
that they succeed in lengthening human’s life. Since the vaccine was
discovered, many fatal diseases, such as polio, malaria, and plague, have be
eliminated in the world and the mortality rate has decreased dramatically.
Surgery progress with new medical instrument and new medicines are produced to
cure people who are suffering form different diseases. Although no definite
cure to some diseases, such as cancer, have been found, ways to release pain
and prolong the life have already been used. The life span of human has
increased a lot with the aid of new medical technology.

    

 

    

Generally, scientists don't get as much pay as film
starts, pop singers or successful painters, However, they do contribute a lot
to the human society and make the globe a more comfortable and pleasant place
to live in. They should be respected and honored by the common people.
