The disease is often passed from mother to son, though it is sometimes passed to daughters. However, daughters who carry the genes which cause hemophilia do not develop the disease. On the contrary, if sons carry the genes, they will develop the disease. The listening passage describes an example of hemophilia which is called “Royal hemophilia”. Queen Victoria was a hemophilia carrier, and she passed the disease to some of her children. Then, her children spread it to the royal families of some other European countries.

It features a bombardier named John Yossarian, who does not want to be in the war. When the novel was first published in 1961, it was not popular at all. However, the Vietnam war took place and heated up years later, then the novel was regarded to be one of the century’s best novels. The listening passage provides some more information about the novel. The title Catch22 has become a expression which if often used in American English. It refers to a situation where there is a catch, or the difficulty to find out a solution to a problem. In addition, the number 22 in the title does not have any meaning. It had been changed several times before the novel was finally published.
