Hey there,
Your GPA is definitely on the low end for a school like NYU but GPA is just one piece of the puzzle. Are you able to speak to any reasons why your GPA has been so low? For example, did you have to work to finance your education or to support family members? Did you or a family member face medical issues that impacted your studies? If you do have a good reason, you can use the optional essay to explain it & b-schools may be willing to overlook it. Either way, a strong GMAT will also help outweigh the GPA. You’ll want to ideally exceed your target schools’ GMAT average since they will be looking to that to compensate for the GPA. Strong work experience and demonstrated success there will be critical as well. Most b-schools are looking for applicant with 3-5 years of experience, so if you are still in undergrad, you’ll want to focus your time now on doing what you can to secure a strong job after graduation. For example, using your summers to do an internship. Also, it’s never too late to improve your GPA. If you still have one year left & can land a GPA in that final year that’s very high that will also help show the adcom that you learned from your mistakes early in undergrad & turned things around. They will look at your GPA by year in addition to looking at overall GPA. All that said, it’s difficult to say whether or not you’ll be a candidate for top 50 since so much rests on your GMAT & your work experience like I said. For now I’d do anything you can to land a strong GPA your final year, study for the GMAT early so you can be sure to gain a high score, and also work towards gaining strong work experience that will demonstrate your ability & outweigh that GPA.
Good luck to you!
