我们仔细看了下所有公立学校的项目，公立学校好学校没有规模特别小的，好学校一般都是中等规模或稍微偏下，如 Ohio State University。和私立学校形成鲜明对照的是，公立学校规模小的, 排名档次反而普遍偏低，其中原因可能是无法吸引到足够多的学生申请，以及申请者的总体素质不会很高。

所以我们的结论是：一般地，私立学校 PhD 项目，规模小则实力强大；相反，公立学校 PhD 项目，规模小则实力弱。

所以我们就不单独讨论所谓小而精的公立学校PHD项目，因为只有 University of California - San Diego 等特例。

对， UT Austin 是公立学校大而强的最好典范。Berkeley 的话，还不是依仗学校的牌子才敢这么大胆地不管学生，但即使这样学生就业出路还是照样好，原因有二，一方面学生素质相对好，这没疑问，另一方面还是学校牌子好。都说MBA 是一场排名的游戏，从某种程度说 PhD 也同样是，所以大家还是尽最大可能去好学校读 PhD。

By the way, the accounting job market is continuing to look better than that for finance or any other area of concentration.

University of Tennessee PhD 项目现已升级为 TIER 3，毕业出路很不错，论坛讨论的很少，可能因为中国学生很少。

Professionally, you are overworked from teaching up to six classes per year.

Academically, you might not be able to publish in top journals due to lack of time, resources, connections, and so on.

Pecuniarily, you may make half as much as research school professors do.

关于数理背景想再说几句。如果你数理背景不是很强，或不喜欢数理，那么选校基本上只有这几个方向, 即 Organization and Management 和 Marketing 的 CB 和 Strategy，这些专业我不懂，但数理要求较低，一般只用到 Linear regression, ANOVA, Factor analysis, experiments 而已。但这些专业进 Research School 非常困难，一般必须是 Top School 才有可能。
