One Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Position for PhD Study, starting
August 2014 (for Fall semester) or January 2015 (for Spring semester):

* Available at Computer Science (CS) Department, Southern Illinois
University Carbondale.

* Standard salary (about $1,500 /month, 9 months/year) for PhD student,
tuition waived (standard fees will be asked by the university for each
graduate student). The support will be for at least 4 years. Summer support
for 2 or 3 months (with Graduate Research Assistant) is also possible
depending on the candidate’s research capability.

* Desired Qualifications include:

1. Have strong motivations in pursuing a research career in CS, with a
possible research direction of data mining, machine learning, statistical
pattern recognition, data analysis, image processing, computer vision, or
biomedical informatics. The dissertation topic can be determined based on
mutual interest later.

2. Have already earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in the department of
maths  / applied maths / computational maths / statistics / computational
physics, or CS dept with a major of machine learning/pattern recognition, or
in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) department with a major of
signal processing/pattern recognition/automatic control.

3. Have taken TOFEL/IELTS with a minimum score of 550 (paper), or 213 (
computer), or 80 (iBT); or 6.5 (IELTS); which is required by the university.

4. Will be asked to take GRE after entering the program, if not taken yet -
NO minimum score requirement but Math score should be good.  
5. The department (graduate program director) may arrange an on-line
interview to determine the student’s English proficiency.
