请刷过千行注意到despite+N.modifier的NN帮我看看自己的理解是不是正确的：

这个题目答案是D，其他选项我没有异议，关于A有个人观点，希望大家讨论理解的是否正确：
despite后面只能加名词形式，即despite n.或despite n. modifier。
这里A选项的despite its covering..在不考虑其逻辑关系的情况下，是不是可以考虑为despite n. modifier的形式？所以乍一看还是可以保留，但是根据逻辑关系，its指代earth,但并不清楚具体是its什么，所以逻辑错误，选项排除
今天在所千行的时候发现despite doing的形式并不完全错误，有上述的两种情况，我想问我这个题A选项despite its covering在不考虑逻辑和语义的情况下的理解是正确的嘛？

我是这么觉得的，首先，sb's doing 或者sth's doing 一般来说在ＧＭＡＴ中是不适当的用法，要尽量排除
　　　　　　　　其次，是"crust" covers the entire planet, 而不是earth，所以逗号后面第一个出现的词，也就是主句的主语必须是crust，而不是A选项的earth。
                        还有，rather后面的It有歧义，是代指earth还是crust呢？

我想选项c如果不是那个is it.应该也对。不知道大家怎么看
