Test of English as a Foreign Language® [TOEFL]
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language®. Please note that the IELTS is not accepted.
An applicant's TOEFL may not be older than 2 years at the time of your application to the program. The Lehigh MS/PhD programs will continue to accept all versions of the TOEFL test as long as the scores come directly from the Educational Testing Service. Scores must be received directly from ETS to be considered official. Lehigh’s institution code number is: 2365, department code 02.
Recommended scores for the three available versions are:
•Paper-based TOEFL—600
•Internet-based TOEFL [iBT]—

Listening 20 20 22 24 20
Speaking 24 24 27 24 24
Writing 25 25 28 25 25
Total 94 94 105 98 94
•Please note: These are minimum scores and do not guarantee admission into a program.
College of Business and Economics Graduate Students currently average 600 on the paper-based TOEFL exam.
If an applicant has completed a baccalaureate or graduate degree or at least 2 years of full-time post-secondary education in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or Canada, he or she may be exempt from the TOEFL. The applicant is not exempt if the language of instruction is English in a non-English speaking country or if you have lived in an English-speaking country. Information on the TOEFL may be found at www.toefl.org. Lehigh's institution code number is 2365.
*For the MSAIA program, English language skills are highly important to success in the program and an internet-based TOEFL (IBT) of 105 will improve your prospect of admission. Admitted applicants are typically required to complete the English as a Second Language American Business English (ABE) program before beginning their graduate program.
International students interested in applying for college-awarded financial aid will be required to pass a Lehigh University SPEAK test upon arrival at Lehigh with a score of at least 230. The College will use the new internet-based TOEFL [iBT] as a screening tool for the awarding of financial aid to international students. In order to be considered, you must achieve a speaking section score of 28, and a listening section score of 20. All awards are contingent upon passing the Lehigh SPEAK test. Information on the Lehigh University SPEAK test may be found at www.lehigh.edu/~inesl.
