Ingeneral, I basically agree with the viewpoint that lies in this statement. Mostof the time, scandals serve to flag important problems more effectively thanany speaker or reformer ever could. However, a truly mature society cannotreveal social problems only by means of scandals.
Onone hand, from the perspective of society, it is apparent that the socialsupervision does have blind point that majority of mistakes, even conspiracy, cannot be manifested, while the scandals can bring unprecedented impact toreflect the true story, surpassing the usual morality and law standards andscales. It is just because of such species of power of influence scandals have,it does focus our attention on specific issues, which makes us be aware of ourown problems. In this sense, scandals have a function of purifying the societyto a certain extent. On the other hand, from the perspective ofhumanity and psychology, people tend to identify with positive issues, whichresults in the concealment of the passive aspect of an issue. Therefore, theinnovators or speakers sometimes cannot find flaws by themselves. Westill remember the scandals happened months ago, which exposed the relationshipbetween former CIA director David Petraeus and Broadwell. After the scandal wasunveiled, the US Defense Minister Leon Panetta requested to examine the moraland ethical training level towards the senior officers in military immediately. He also clearly stated to the General Martin Dempsey, the Chairmanof the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that “the recent scandal may lead the public toquestion that whether we are able to sustain a high moral standard inleadership”. Undoubtedly, without David’s scandal, it is hard for the public torethink and review the issue of morality and ethics, an issue that is vital forthe development of a society, leadership, and politics.
Of course, every coin has two sides, andso do scandals. We need to realize that scandals may be colored some time, oreven utilized by scandal makers in order to attract people’s attention or sensationalizesome issues on purpose. To put it in another way, if the revealment of scandalsis based on the meet of public curiosity, or the investigation of celebrities’private lives, or the speculation of government policy fumbles, the scandalsmay become the push of shaking people’s confidence towards justice, eroding thetrust and safety feelings between people, or even eliciting panic of societyand mistrust of government, which finally leads to a result of societyturbulence and unrest.
In addition, our attitude towardsscandals is also worthy to notice. Since scandals are useful sometimes, similarly, we should treat it seriously, thereby letting scandals truly be oneffect. This reminds of that after the David’s scandal, the example I mentionabove, the internet link named “DavidPetraeus.com” was dealt for 70,000 dollarson eBay, which shocked most of people. I believe if we treat scandals only inthe way like this, scandals would definitely lose their original value ofhelping us to find problems and only be considered as a gossip.
As I mentioned at the beginning of mypassage, scandals have their own effect for people to recognize this society;however, one society cannot rely too much on scandals to expose problems. Amature society is supposed to have its own moral value system, in order tobetter facilitate the development of society.
