Argument 59
The following appeared in a memo from the president of Bower Builders, a company that constructs new homes.
"A nationwide survey reveals that the two most-desired home features are a large family room and a large, well-appointed kitchen. A number of homes in our area built by our competitor Domus Construction have such features and have sold much faster and at significantly higher prices than the national average. To boost sales and profits, we should increase the size of the family rooms and kitchens in all the homes we build and should make state-of-the-art kitchens a standard feature. Moreover, our larger family rooms and kitchens can come at the expense of the dining room, since many of our recent buyers say they do not need a separate dining room for family meals." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
The argument has supported an opinion thatthe Bower Builders company should build the house with a large size of familyrooms and kitchens, and less space for dining room. Since the competitor DomusConstruction’s similar design consistence with the nationwide survey has earneda higher profit. Also, because the recent buyers have demonstrated their preferencefor smaller dining room, so the Bower Builders company has such advise. However, all these reasons lack some important assumption, which will underminethe decision of the construction company.
For the first reason, the nationwide surveymay not be suitable, because it lacks the assumption that the nationwide surveycan represent all areas and all people’s thought currently. The nationwidesurvey may be narrow for some specific people or places, because it don’clearly explain the data base for which kinds of people and how they completethe survey. Also, the survey doesn’t explicitly define the year to finish it.The survey perhaps accomplished by ten or fifteen years ago but not by currentdata. Therefore, the survey will be out of date and not represent the currentcitizens.
Continuously, the competitor DomusConstruction has sole for higher prices and faster, which don’t mean the designis good. It doesn’t illustrate the assumption that there are no other factorsto improve the selling prices and other designs such as a smaller family roomand kitchen’s prices will be lower than the new design. It may relate with thecurrent economic background, since the economy is developing and people preferto buy the houses with a higher prices. Also, it doesn’t demonstrate the pricesfor other design such as the smaller family room and kitchen, which may have ahigher price to be sold. Furthermore, it declares the assumption of thenational average will be high, so the Bower Company uses it as a comparisonwith the prices of Domus Company. However, the national average’s prices may below, so it doesn’t support the view that the new design will be success.
Moreover, the support reason includes thatthe recent buyers don’t need the separate dining room, so the Bower Builderstried to replace the dining room with the larger rooms and kitchens. Theassumption for this reason is all the buyers prefer the design without thedining room for family meals. Nevertheless, in reality, some buyers loving thedining room still exist. Also it doesn’t clearly demonstrate the assumptionabout the viability of this survey. Maybe, for some young people, they don’tneed the dining room. But for some elder people, who will prefer to cook andeat at home, so they love the dining room.
Therefore, the argument doesn’t clearlyillustrate all assumption such as whether the nationwide survey can be astandard and the year of the survey. Also, it doesn’t assume that there are no otherfactors to improve the prices for Domus Company and the older design will havea higher price. Finally, it doesn’t clarify the assumption that the dining roomadvice will be suitable for every buyer.
