Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Colleges or Universities should offer more courses to prepare students for the future before they start working.

Universities are places where students can get higher education to prepare for their future lives and enhance themselves. Nowadays, with more and more intense competitions in varied fields, I think it is very important for universities to provide their students with better job preparation before they start working. Only in this way will they benefit not only the students, but also the universities themselves and the whole society.

Offering students better job preparation is a good way to help students find jobs more easily and perform better in their own careers. No matter what a student majors in the university, he or she will eventually enter the job market, facing challenges from peers. And if students have already accepted some training or internship in the areas they choose, it is quite likely that they will be more efficient in their future jobs and can get to know the skills and knowledge needed in that area more sufficiently. This means that they may get more opportunities than others on further development and job promotion.

Besides, offering students better job preparation also helps improve the quality and enrollment of a university. By doing so, students and their parents may find that graduates from this university are more skilled at finding jobs or more capable in companies; thus maybe students tend to apply to this university and enroll in this school. At the same time those who benefit from the job preparation program are likely to contribute to the university after they graduate, which will surely help the university improve their quality of education and do good to more students.

In addition, offering students better job preparation can boost the development of the whole industry. By training students' specific skills in certain fields, universities send students with much practical knowledge to companies, which will greatly improve the competitive power of companies and motivate the development of the whole industry. For example, some universities provide students with many chances of internship. During this kind of experiences, students get to know whether they are really interested in certain areas, thus they may devote more energy to their jobs in the future, which can bring more enthusiasm and creativity to companies. In the end this will benefit the whole society, providing more fresh air of thought.

To sum up, there are many advantages in different aspects to offer students better job preparation before they enter the job market, so it is really essential for universities to do so.

Do you agree with the viewpoint that people are now easier to become educated than in thepast?

Education is always an important method for human beings to make progress. With the development of varied aspects of people's lives and study, I believe that it is easier for people to become educated than in the past, thus more contribution to the world has been made as time went by.

It is known to all that technology has been advanced significantly since last century, which leads to great improvement in our education resources and means. In the past, if students wanted to learn a foreign language such as English, their listening and spoken English might be very poor in that there were no equipments for them to listen to English texts and no foreign teachers to talk with. However, with the appearance of CDs, MP3s and some internet resources, students can easily have access to many video and audio materials which may help them learn English more quickly and effectively. We can conclude that development of technique benefits people a lot when it comes to the quality and availability of education.

Besides, change in attitude towards education also makes it easier for people to get educated. This is obviously reflected in the fact that parents and government officials have paid more attention on this issue. In the old times of China, girls who wanted to get educated were often considered as traitorous and not worthwhile to emulate. They were forbidden by their parents to get educated; as a result, most women at that time were not literate at all. Compared with those women, women today are much more educated and play an important role in the whole industry for the reason that they are allowed to go to school and learn specific knowledge just as men do. This implies that people gradually get to understand the importance of education for all citizens, which will bring prosperity of the whole society eventually.

Furthermore, for those who had difficulties being educated due to finance problems and remote location, governments and schools have provided many welfare programs to help them. With plenty of opportunities to acquire scholarships and subsidies, students are more likely to perfect their education without worrying about other problems. Also the popularization of compulsory education offers more chances to those who are eager to receive education but live relatively in a remote place. It is the sound welfare system that guarantees the availability of education, which makes it easier to get educated for most people. In this way I believe it will become a positive cycle which results in further improvement in education and social development.

To sum up, I agree with the statement that people are now easier to become educated than in the past because many aspects of our society have largely improved to relatively high levels. Our society now has more ability to meet the needs of people who seek education and self-enhancement.

Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while othersthink they should spend more time educating students. What is your view?

Professors, as an essential element in the structure of a university, are very important not only from the aspect of students' progress, but also from that of the development of a university. Considering professors' great role played in the education system, some people hold that they should spend more time to educate students rather than to do research. Personally, I basically agree with this statement given the reasons below.

The main body of education system is always students; in other words, it is their improvement and future that we care about most. Professors as educators are responsible for students who are eager to acquire necessary knowledge. Only in this way can professors equip students with more specific skills and broaden their horizons through certain programs and courses in the university, which may eventually benefit students in their future careers. And if professors spend more time on research, students will be ignored to some extend and it will affect their higher education.

Besides, by spending more time to instruct students, professors make it possible for the university to improve its quality of teaching as well as academic level. With the improvement of students' specialized skills in a university, I am convinced that students in high school are more likely to enroll in this school, which will greatly enhance the whole construction of the university. Furthermore, students today not only learn basic knowledge of certain disciplines, but also help do some researches with their mentors in the laboratories. Once professors spend more time to educate them, they together with professors, motivated by the power of creation, are able to achieve greater progress in certain projects and researches. This pattern will in the end become a positive cycle for both professors and students.

Admittedly, it is definitely very important for professors to spend enough time to do research for the reason that they also face pressure from their colleagues and the corresponding industry. Very understandable is that they would like to seek success in their fields with well-established theory. Doing research has already occupied a large amount of their time, which still probably won't be followed up by excellent papers, let alone educating students, during which process they just cannot obtain short-term effects. Nevertheless, we can't conclude that they should spend more time on researches in that it is the long-term profits that we should consider comprehensively. Spending more time on directing students is not only professors’ duty as being educators but also a method to improve them.

To sum up, taking into account the aspects above, I strongly recommend that university professors spend more time to educate students rather than to do research. Weighing both merits of the two ways, I hold the belief that the latter method of allocating time for a professor is more conductive in many facets. (468)

In the reading material the author holds that the "let it burn" policy should be replaced due to the consequence of the 1988 Yellowstone fire. Meanwhile the professor argues against the author from three aspects, plantation diversity, population recovery and tourism revival.

To begin with, though the article mentions that Yellowstone fires resulted in large damage to vegetation, the professor asserts that the diversity of vegetation has already increased after the fire. This is because the scorches were soon supplanted by new smaller plants and opportunities were given to some small plants which originally cannot survive in this area.

Besides, the passage states that the park's wildlife suffered much from the fire. The lecture, however, insists that the fire virtually brought new population to the park, since the new plants there provided an ideal habitat for some small animals such as rabbits and hares, which lead to the increase in predators that depended on them for food, thereby a stronger food chain eventually.

Last, the author of the material thinks that the fires undermined the tourism value of the park because fewer visitors came to the park, which is challenged by the professor. She points out that since this kind of fire does not happen every year, visitors came back next year and Yellowstone has never seen such fire.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Children should choose the same career as their parents. Use specific examples to support your answer.

When it comes to the long-existing issue of job choosing, some people hold that children should choose the same career as their parents, while others believe that this kind of decision will not benefit children's future development. As far as I am concerned, parents' jobs shouldn't be a definite reference while choosing careers, since it is interest and career development prospect that people should consider carefully on doing decisions of choosing jobs.

True, it is quite likely that children has the same interest in certain areas as their parents do because they may accept subtle influence from their parents during their process of growing. For example, both Madam Curie and her daughter Irene won Nobel Prize for their great contribution to chemistry. Under this condition, having the same career as one's parents is actually beneficial to him or her. However, there also remains a possibility that children who work in the same field as their parents may feel great pressure from their parents' achievements though they do have interest in this field. If this happened, children's development would be affected and restricted under the shadow of their reputed parents.

Above we just talk about the circumstance that children have the same interest with their parents. What if they actually are not very fond of their parents' careers? What if they select their occupations just due to their parents' force? Then children may well feel bored about the related knowledge and do badly in their courses. For instance, some people in my university do not like their majors but because of their parents' orders they cannot change to majors they like. Eventually absenteeism and poor grades often come along with them, which then results in the emergence of a vicious circle.

Besides interest, considered should be career development prospects and its status quo of technical level prior to parents' careers. As rapid development has taken place in varied aspects of society, shouldn't it be necessary to take into account the panorama and its future of a vocation? If children enter a field which has little space for further enhancement, even with their parents' aid as practitioners in the same field, children won't go too far in this sphere.

In conclusion, I personally just do not quite agree with the statement that children should choose the same career as their parents for the reasons above. Electing professions is great turning point in children's development; rather than consider parents' careers, children should follow their interest and make decisions regarding their own foundations as well as the tendency of different crafts.(427)
