按照正确答案，正确的句子应该是：
Many experts regarded the large increase in credit card borrowing in March not as a sign that households were pressed for cash and forced to borrow, but as a sign that households were confident they could safely handle new debt.

画线部分是“but as a sign that households were confident they could safely”，这也是书上给的正确答案。
我的疑问是，were后面的这个表语从句不是应该有个that引导么，难道这里的that可以省略？

终于有人回应了confident后面是个啥从句？我都糊涂了，是宾语从句还是表语从句？

这个问题可不好回答，在学术界有说它是状语从句的有说它是宾语从句，最新的说法是表语补足语。

其实that-clause里面that是否省略这个问题有时候并不是hardline rule，追求的是：express the intended meaning correctly & efficiently.
具体说来，决定于：1.假如省略，是否有歧义；2.假如不省略，是否sounds awkward.


就这题来说：
1.假如省略，是否有歧义？ 没有。
2.假如不省略，是否sounds awkward？
确实有那么一点，不信你来读读：
but as a sign that households were confident that they could safely handle new debt.

两个that那么“串连”，读起来挺别扭。


类似的例子曾经多次出现，GMAC会在不影响语意表达的前提下展现“爱美之心”。我的日记贴#69就有例子。
