还有一点想确认一下，这里的serious，在ABCD中都应该是歧义的吧，因为它既可以向前修饰，又可以向后修饰~求确认

C选项还原应该是，
Scholars and critics were not seriously to begin to study until almost 1900


were 后面 应该跟的是 beginning 而不是 to begin ....
C可以改为 not until almost 1900  were  scholars and critics seriously beginning to study  
其实也可以这样改：
C可以改为 not until almost 1900   did    scholars and critics seriously begin to study


我觉得 这里的 to do 不定式 作为表语 用法不正确。
be 动词 + to do 不定式 一般都是 修饰 be 动词 前面的主语  作为 主语的 补充说明和解释。
例子，My goal is to beat GMAT

而，这里C的表达是
Scholars and critics were not to begin to study ...
be动词 were 后面直接跟 to do 不定式。

OG 似乎在说  He is to beat GMAT.  "to beat GMAT" 作表语 表达awkward

等了一天终于有人回复了~小哥，我不太懂为什么were动词后面不能用to do，这有没有什么明确的说法呢~
