In the memorandum, the author pointed out that since the late-night news program devoting more time on national news at the expense of weather and local news last year, many people complaint about the coverage of weather and local news, along with the local business cancled advertising contracts. So the program must restore the time for weather and local news to its former level, in order to attract more viewers and to avoid losing further advertising revenues. However, This memorandum seems unconvincing, without specific evidences to support its conclusion. Fist of all, the memorandum did not show the change of the number of viewers since the change of the news program, nor what they exactly complaint about. In fact, the number of viewers may have not changed, or even have increased. Maybe the viewers who complaint still watch the news program as usual. And it is possible that the viewers think that the news program did not cover the weather and local news that they are interested in and reported those irrelevant news instead. In short, I can not consider the change of the news program unsuccessful without these evidences. Besides, even the news program lost viewers since the enlargement of national news section, the author can not guarantee that restoring the time for weather and local news to its former level would attract more viewers. The author signed nothing about the preference of the viewers, let alone other potential aspects that may affect the number of viewers. Perhaps the viewers prefer more entertainment news or sports news, restoring the time for weather and local news would be futile because the viewers did care about neither weather and local news nor national news. Or people nowadays rely more and more on Internet to access news rather than television. The station can not stop the trend by changing the content of the news program. Obviously, the author is too hasty to draw conclusion that restoring the time for weather and local news to its former level would have the predicted effect - to attract more viewers. In addition, the author blamed the cancled advertising contract on more national news, while presented no evidence of the effect of other potential reasons. For instance, the local business cancled the contract out of a financial crisis or an shift in advertising strategic, which have nothing to do with the content of the news program. Furthermore, the author did not point out whether any other business signed new contract with the station since the former contract was cancled. If many firms are willing to sign new contracts at a price that outweigh the old one, it is unreasonable to say that the increased national news leaded to revenue loss. In conclusion, in order to evaluate the argument, I would need evidences about the number changed of the viewers in the past year, the preference of potential viewers, the reason of the cancled contract and the willingness of advertising on the programs of other business.
