22. Many people believe that a few individuals or small groups (family, friends, teachers, celebrities, for example) have caused them to think and behave in the way they do. Yet it is always society as a whole that defines us and our attitudes, not a few individuals.

Is it invariably society as a whole that exerts a tremendous influence on us, not a few individuals who defines us and our attitudes, as the speaker asserts? I concede that the society, of course, have a great impact on our characters, personalities and behavior alike. Nevertheless,
it is unwarranted and ridiculous to unnecessarily extend this broad assertion that a few individuals have nothing to do with the acquired qualities. As a matter of fact, our family and friends and other groups around us directly affect our character and attitude.

Admittedly, from the moment of a person’s birth, the customs into which he is born shape his or her experience and behavior. People with different cultural backgrounds behave differently in their daily life due to geographical, environmental, historical, religious, and economic differences, etc., each ethnic group has his own culture. Particularly, intoday’s technological advanced society, society plays a vital role in defining us and our attitudes. The diversified electrical communication approaches makes it much easier for people to access information of the world. Internet breaks the spatial limitations and brings everyone easily and quickly to new ideas and happenings, which further amplified the influence of the society or even the world as a whole on individuals. Consider these years heated microblog like facebook, myspace and the like, which is a platform for the people over the world to communicate and exchange their ideas and share the fashionable subculture. And the subculture gradually influences us to think and behave in the way we do.

Nonetheless, we are also influenced by a few individuals in many fashions. After all, man is a social being. And our character begins in the home, where we learn proper standards of conduct, principled values, and the importance of service. As is known to us, the minute a child is born of two parents, a close bond is formed between them. During he or she growing years, children watch their parents and affected by them from the way of thinking to the trifle everyday habits, and get basic knowledge and norm from them. What we learned from our parents in the early years will be encoded in our mind and be reflected in nearly every aspect of our behaviors. Then, when we attended school, our teachers who indoctrinated us with their profound knowledge, taught us scientific truth as well integrity. Moreover, our close friends somewhat have the direct connections to define us. As the old saying goes, “keep good men company and you shall be of the number”. When we confronted difficulties or defeat, our best friends encourage us to persevere. So from ignorant infants to independent adults, such individuals play an indispensable role in our life.

In addition, a few individuals not only affect our character and attitude, but also broaden and develop our mind and even influence our whole life. For example, Orham Pamuk---the Nobel Literature Prizer in 2006---has greatly influenced by his father. His father’s youth was devoted into literature. Meanwhile, his father, since Pamuk was very young, talked to him many books, poets, philosophers, treated him with uttermost respect, and planted desires of reading, learning and seeking him into which would ultimately lead him to a writer. A parent is not only a provider of material goods and mental support to his or her children, but also a role model. Whatever parents say or do, it may not only decide who we are, but also what kind of person we want to be. Therefore, can we say a few individuals like our parents have little to do with our attitudes and define us?

In the final analysis, no denying the fact that the society as a whole profoundly makes a great impact on us, neither can we overlook the influence exerted by individuals and small groups like interconnected families, friends, and teachers. After all, society is composed of each individual. And no one can be truly detached and isolated from the rest. Each of us continuously influences the others’ attitudes and behaviors, and likewise receives their influence.
