51. Young people should be encouraged to pursue long-term, realistic goals rather than seek immediate fameand recognition.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

The way to a success of life is fairly long and circuitous. Sometimes people, especially the youth, may expect to achieve their goals via a short cut, as many people are trying all the time. Such behaviors are usually considered to be unrealistic, and even immoral sometimes when some tricks are involved, therefore leading to an assertion that young people should be encouraged to pursue a long-term and realistic goals rather than seek immediate fame and recognition. While I doubt the general validity of this statement, I agree with the point in this issue on such pragmatic attitude towards success.

From my 21-year experiences do I learn that the true successes and long-lasting reputation can never be achieved via an immediate deed, instead the immediate fame or recognition can only maintain for a short spell due to its vacancy in content. Actually, all true masterpieces require great work and devotion into them, as Edison said, 99% efforts and 1% inspiration. Take the singer career as an example. People may consider their work simple and easy, just singing and making shows, and therefore think the way to achieve their careers not that difficult or mainly by talent and luck. However, the truth is not, and the efforts behind the superficially simple work may require a lot of skills and sweat. The westlife boys, for example, had to work very hard for the whole 18 hours per day in the first beginning 7-8 years to accumulate enough support from the fans and increase their reputation to a higher level. In this light, there may simply exist no or very few immediate ways to fame or success, making the pursuing action a waste of time and meaningless.

Moreover, as for the young people, who are mature neither in skills nor in the mind states for setbacks or praises, the way chasing for fast fame can be even harmful to them. Some children may present great talent in some field at an early age and even make some splendid achievements. Although the work done by these prodigies may surprise us and win them a fast fame, they may therefore suffer from these fames and stop grow up. As a result of their talent, they may be surrounded by the high expectations, tougher and tougher challenges to face, pressure or even jealous eye-sights from others all the time, and making them uneasy to make further progress, even driving them to make tricks and deceits. After all, they are just children, unstable and lack of preparation for all different impacts from the external world. Given these many negative issues in consideration, why not leave enough time for the young to grow up and make preparation for these impacts? It could be better for their future, isn't it?

The saying to advice the young not chasing the fast fame and recognition does not mean the young people should give up all short-run goals and only focus on the long-term ones. After all, the realization of any ambitious dreams comes from little-by-little accumulation of fulfillments of the continuous short-term goals. Just like doing math, people may get award from the process of figuring out every single problem, therefore develop their skills gradually with the increasing confidence. No one can own an ambition to achieve a great and long-scope target without working out the simple questions one after one, since they may fail to develop interests, confidence and good understanding on math due to lacking of fundamental knowledge. From this point, the short-term targets are worth chasing and necessary for successes.

In sum, the radical action to chase an immediate fame for a young person is unreasonable, due to the intrinsic impracticality of this behavior and his immature essence in dealing with the problems in front. However, it does not mean that a young person should simply leave the short-term goals completely aside but only dream about achieving the long-term ones. For a reasonably beneficial way for the development of the youth, they are expected to be pragmatic and ambitious for the long-run targets, fulfill the short-run goals to guarantee their growth as well.
